Start with the assignment, not the logo

AI products are often compared as if one winner should handle everything. In practice, the best choice for careful research may not be the best choice for a quick draft, image edit, coding task, or team workspace.

Write down the work before you compare tools. Define the input, the person who will use the result, the format you need, the sources it must rely on, and the cost of a mistake.

02

Run the same small test

Choose five representative examples from your real life or work. Give each product the same instructions and score the result.

  • Quality: did it produce a useful answer?
  • Accuracy: what needed checking or correction?
  • Usability: could you get the result into the next part of your work?
  • Time: how long did the whole process take, including cleanup?
  • Cost: what plan or usage level would this require over a month?
03

The wrapper matters as much as the model

A model is the underlying engine. The product around it determines the interface, memory, file handling, search, integrations, administrative controls, and data settings. Two products using related technology can feel completely different in daily use.

For a team, account controls and data terms may matter more than a small benchmark difference. For an individual, ease of use and the tools already included may decide the answer.

04

Expect the answer to change

Model availability, product limits, features, and prices change quickly. Record the date of your comparison and keep the test. You can rerun the same examples later instead of starting over or trusting a new marketing claim.

Try this

Give the same real task to two tools. Do not ask which answer you like first. Count the facts you had to correct, the edits you had to make, and the minutes until the result was usable.
